The Southern rock quintet Blind Melon is probably best remembered
for the 1993 video for their single "No Rain" (taken from their
eponymous debut album), which featured a chubby girl dancing
around in a bee costume. The surrealistic video propelled Blind
Melon to triple-platinum sales, but their 1995 follow-up, Soup was
a commercial failure.
Just as Blind Melon was poised to take its place in history as
a one-hit wonder, singer Shannon Hoon fatally overdosed on heroin
on October 21, 1995. The band released the 1996 rarities compilation,
Nico, named after Hoon's infant daughter, as a tribute to their
deceased singer; the remaining members of Blind Melon plan to
continue performing under a new name.
